About Futureproof Building
Based in Exeter, Devon, Futureproof Building is dedicated to producing buildings rooted in principles of sustainability, high performance and quality workmanship. Our focus is on using locally sourced and natural materials wherever possible and we strive to minimise wastage at all stages of the building process.
The main focus of our construction is timber frame, using local timber where possible, which enables us to produce structures quickly and efficiently with precise detailing, maximum insulation and very low embodied energy. We aim to create energy-efficient buildings that are consistent with passive design principles and are therefore resilient in the face of rising energy prices.
We achieve this by using substantial insulation throughout, maximising solar gain, designing out thermal bridges and creating an airtight structure to produce a healthy, efficient building with low running costs and a greatly reduced carbon impact. Our approach focuses on natural materials and we specialise in airtight but vapour-open timber structures using wood-fibre insulation.
Whether you are interested in a low-energy new build or extension, an energy-efficient retrofit, an outbuilding or garden workspace, we have the skills, expertise and enthusiasm to carry it to fruition. We bring a wealth of experience in bespoke and low energy building approaches and have a comprehensive network of skilled and trusted tradespeople and local suppliers that enable us to tailor a team for projects big or small. We are comprehensively insured and can work alongside your architect or yourselves personally. If necessary, we can recommend local architects well-versed in energy-efficient buildings.
Jo Goodey, Founder of Futureproof Building

Jo Goodey first began working in the building industry during summer holidays while studying at Cambridge University for an undergraduate degree in Archaeology and Anthropology. After completing university, Jo’s interest in carpentry led him to study for an NVQ2 in site carpentry, following which he worked at Carpenter Oak Ltd in Devon for two years, producing timber-framed buildings with one of the UK’s leading companies in this field.
Jo’s passion for developing environmental awareness in the building industry and expanding his own knowledge of sustainability in building materials and techniques resulted in an MSc degree in Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology/University of East London in 2009.
Jo has over fifteen years experience running his own business and has managed and worked on a diverse and interesting range of projects across Devon, the wider West Country, London and beyond. Futureproof Building Ltd was established to provide high quality, ecologically sensitive building services in Devon
